Citywide Strategy in Community Upgrading Culmination Workshop

A project culmination workshop was held last 6 June at the Oakwood Premier-Joy Nostalg Center attended by those involved in the Citywide strategy pilot communities from Muntinlupa, Quezon City, and Barangay 177 in Caloocan. The participants shared their experiences as well as the important things they learned from the exercise.  Social Housing Finance Corporation President Ma. Ana Oliveros also attended the event.  In her message, she expressed her desire that local government units will buy into this strategy and that they will see it as something that can enhance their programs on social housing and community upgrading.

Citywide strategy is an alternative solution to informal settlement upgrading which entails mapping all the informal settlements within a city, developing a citywide shelter development plan, and systematically allocating resources to priority informal settlements. It is a demand-driven approach where communities drive the settlement upgrading planning and implementation process, rather than a supply-driven approach that focuses on mass construction of houses.

Technical Assistance Movement for People and Environment (TAMPEI) tapped Muntinlupa Development Foundation (MDF) as the partner NGO for Muntinlupa for the pilot run of this project which was funded by the World Bank.
